The White Ribbon Alliance ([link]) is a fantastic charity which prevents maternal mortality (i.e. women dying in childbirth) mainly in the poorest countries. These women are dying because:
- There are inadequate resources - too few medicines which we take for granted and even too few beds to go through labour on
- Such hospitals as there are are inaccessible. Heavily pregnant women are expected to walk across muddy/dusty roads for days to give birth
- Too few healthworkers
- and many more reasons and complications
If you can, a donation to the White Ribbon Alliance via their website would be much appreciated. If you do, send me a note with the amount so I can add it to my total. My silence was unbelievably hard but it was worth it for the money raised.
If anyone ever wants a really interesting week, do a sponsored silence. You learn so much about communication and friends and stuff. I must have burnt a shedload of calories too by my extravagant sign language and waving to get people's attention...
